One of the most successful means to overcome the fear of speaking in public is to start speaking before an audience at an early age and never give up. With that in mind, 4-H encourages all youth to participate in giving a presentation, which begins with research, compiling of information in a logical order, and ending with a speech that lasts between 5 and 12 minutes.  A 4-H presentation is used to describe in detail a subject or activity selected by the presenter through showing and telling before a panel of judges.  Leaders encourage club members to participate in learning to speak publicly so that they will develop the skills needed to become more poised, confident and self assured when they find themselves before a audience. 

Several Carteret County 4-H’ers gave outstanding presentations at County Activity Day, earning the right to compete at Southeast District Activity Day at Lenior Community College, June 27.  The competition in many categories was very competitive, but several county 4-H’ers proved that they had developed all the skills necessary to win a medal and advance to the state competition at Athens High School in Raleigh, July 22.  Those giving presentations in the horse categories will compete at the State Horse in Raleigh, July 9.

At all levels of competition, participants are judged for accuracy of subject matter, voice, visuals, poise, presentation development and not going over or under the time restriction.  Judges for the county event were Tabbie Merrill, Meg Rawls, Jeanne Huntley, Dr. Pennylloyd Baldridge, Carol Mizelle and Kevin Peele.

All winners at the district received either a gold, silver or bronze medal at the district level and presenters in several categories received a scholarship to attend 4-H Congress held July 21-25 at North Carolina State University.  Any 4-H’er winning gold at the state level receives a cash award. 

Participating in County Activity Day, but unable to attend the district competition was Erin Collins.
