Whether it's learning a new skill such as canoing, sailing, archery, swimming, horseback riding, natural environments or just adjusting to staying in a cabin with 24 others their age for one week, campers gain experiences that will stay with them the rest of their life. Carteret County campers agreed it was a fantastic week at Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center in Reidsville.

Thirty-one youths braved the summer elements, made new friends and returning campers renewed acquaintances the week of June 15-20. During the evening's activities, campers competed in land and water sports, a talent show and capped-off the week with a dance Thursday evening.  Before departing Friday morning, each cabin counselor presented special awards to each camper. Receiving Super Camper Award from Carteret County were Gabriel Cunningham, Aaron Caldwell and Elizabeth Gunter.

Older campers participate in the Adventurer and Trekker programs, an advanced setting that includes a high ropes course, rock climbing, outdoor cooking and one night of camping.

The mission of 4-H camping is to use the natural and social environments to provide learning experiences that are appropriate for children and youth.  The camping adventure also provides young people an opportunity to develop skills they will use throughout their lifetime.

Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center near Reidsville is accredited by the American Camping Association, a distinction shared by only 25% of camps in the United States.  The camp is open to boys and girls, ages 8-14.  More information about the camp may be found at www.nc4h.org.
