The first of AUGUST brings lots of opportunities for Burke County citizens to be entertained and involved! The Burke County Fair runs August 5-9, 2008. I know most of you are saying, WOW that’s early?! Well, this year there are MANY opportunities for families and individuals to participate and have lots of FUN!!! Not to mention, this is the prefect time of the year to CELEBRATE our Local Farmers!
Burke County citizens both young and old are invited to enter their homemade baked goods, arts and crafts, and clothing and textiles into the exhibit hall. In addition, entries are accepted from those beautiful flowers growing in your yard to the produce in your garden or even the canned goods in your pantry. All of these are ways for you to show off your best and win cash prizes! There is also a Scarecrow contest that both youth and adults can enter, with chances to win cash prizes. Youth can be involved by coloring the “Thank a Local Farmer” picture for the coloring contest or participate in the “Got to be NC Agriculture” Scavenger Hunt for a chance to win a bicycle! All ENTRIES into the Burke County Fair are due on Sunday, August 3rd or Monday, August 4th by 6:00 pm.
If you and your family enjoy the world of animals, then the Burke County Fair is the place for you. This year the 4-H Livestock Exhibit will be happening in the barn, with a variety of farm animals on display by Burke County 4-Hers. There will be a Goat Show held on Tuesday night at 5:30 pm and a Cattle Show held on Wednesday night at 5:30 pm. The public is invited to participate or come and watch!
The most popular part of the fair for youth is the rides! This year the carnival company, “Smokey Mountain Amusements” will be providing a variety of rides and games for all ages of fairgoers. There are several bracelet days, which let individuals ride all day or night for one price. Not to mention, Opening Night will host “Dollar Days,” where all rides will only be $1 each. When you need a break from the rides, don’t miss out on the opportunity to go through the Exhibit Hall and visit the food booths to support our area non-profit organizations and civic clubs. This is their way of raising money for special projects and scholarships!
As the weekend draws near, there are additional opportunities for fun and entertainment. On Thursday, August 7 the Fair will offer two sessions of Wrestling in the Entertainment Arena. On Friday, August 8th, Burke County 4-H will be holding a PUBLIC Auction. The Auction will begin at 6:30 pm. And includes items such as Furniture, pottery, artwork, live animals, gift certificates and much more!! All proceeds will stay in the county to benefit Burke County 4-H and its members.
Tickets will be available nightly at the gate or you may purchase tickets in advance for a discount at several locations, including the Cooperative Extension Office. You can also go online to: www.BurkeCountyFair.org to find out more information.
So, as you can see AUGUST 5-9, the place to be is the 2008 Burke County Fair, hope to see you there!
